St. Isaac's Cathedral, the impressive work of Auguste Montferrand is an outstanding monument of late Russian classicism of the middle of the XIX century.

The interior decoration is represented by all kinds of monumental and decorative art - here one can see paintings, mosaics, sculptures, colored stone cladding and even non-traditional decoration for the Orthodox church - the stained glass window "Risen Christ" at the main altar. The main iconostasis is decorated with malachite and lazurite columns.

On the excursion "The decoration of the Cathedral" you will be able to appreciate the amazing combination of different types of monumental and decorative art in the artistic decoration of St. Isaac's Cathedral. Thanks to the artistic illumination, the interior of the temple appears before the eyes of the spectators as a united whole, where each decorative element interacts with the architectural solution.

The excursion "The sculpture of St. Isaac's Cathedral" introduces unique monumental and decorative sculpture inside and outside of St. Isaac's Cathedral and the scenes of bas- reliefs.
Duration: 45 minutes.

The thematic tour of the cathedral painting is divided into two parts - 45 minutes each:

  • The first part is devoted to the history of painting of the cathedral, the importance of painting in the decoration of an Orthodox church, as well as to the paintings depicting scenes of the Old Testament.
  • The second part introduces the paintings and icons depicting scenes of the New Testament.

For visitors with disabilities an additional service in St. Isaac's Cathedral is available – the visit of the 37 m tall observation deck with a guided tour. The visit is possible only by advance arrangement during the period from April to October, upon good weather conditions, the absence of strong winds and rainfalls. People over14 are allowed to visit the observation deck.
The observation deck is open from April to October every day except Wednesdays.
